While replacing my turn signal I noticed some old dried grease on both sides of the horn contacts. What should I replace it with? Does it need to be conductive?

While replacing my turn signal I noticed some old dried grease on both sides of the horn contacts. What should I replace it with? Does it need to be conductive? The factory manual says "Lightly grease contact ring for signal horn. Use electrical contact grease." What they fail to clarify is, do they mean conductive or not. I have seen arguments both for and against conductive grease as well as dielectric grease. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) |

With a proper mechanical electrical contact, non-conductive dielectric grease is the proper use. Using conductive grease(?) will lead to spurious undesired connections.
If dielectric grease stops the electrical connection from functioning then you do not have a proper contact. |

Used some dielectric grease. I'll see how that works.

I doubt this was around in 1970, but I found Wurth Stabilant 22A. German. Areas of use includes horn circuits. Not a grease though, which would seem to be a key requirement of the horn contact plate / contact pin application. Also $106!

@Shivers - did this eliminate the grinding noise that i get when turning the wheel and the lube of the day has worn off?
I'm looking for something long-lasting that keeps the rubbing/griding noise of the horn contacts at bay. |

I'm looking for something long-lasting that keeps the rubbing/griding noise of the horn contacts at bay. I do not know yet, all my 72 stuff is going into Howard but I have to get Howard ready first. I'm shaking it Boss. I suspect it will. At least for a while. It may end up as part of my maintenance. The grease said it could handle extreme conditions, I figure if I replace the old fabric braided fuel lines I should be ok. From the internet: "Hzutloer Copper Conductive Grease is physically and thermally "tough" under extreme conditions, as it is rated to withstand high temperatures up to 1,100 °C (2,012 °F). It uses copper powder to maintain conductivity while resisting rust, corrosion, and arcing on metal contact surfaces." |
