Tried to put in an order with a foreign supplier that I have used many times and got the following message. Ended up ordering from a US based company, at a higher cost (up to 50% higher for some parts) as I had no choice. However, they are limited to stock on hand for some parts for the same reason. So when they run out we are going to be even more limited in selection until this self inflicted "situation" has been resolved, not to mention the hit to our bank accounts.

I can't blame the company I first tried to order from. I wouldn't want to be dealing with the uncertainty and lack of coherence that they have to navigate.

I know I'm going to run into this very shortly as well. Have some wheels for a non-914 vehicle I ordered. Told they were "over seas" and a month plus away. Hope they don't get stopped.

yes. australia post for instance has suspended the shipment of parcels to the USA until the situation of exactly who collects the tariffs is resolved.

a very similar thing happened with australia about 3 years ago. new fed govt. cracked down on 10% GST tax collection on internationally ordered items. initially a lot of foreign sellers (including those in the USA) terminated sales to australia. the govt unwisely and somewhat impractically imposed collection of the GST at the point of sale. it was never going to work. why would a company or individual collect taxes for a foreign government. eventually the situation was resolved. the shipping company collects for the government here now when the parcel arrives. for fed ex, dhl, aus post etc this is no real problem - they do it and impose a modest charge for the collection passed on to the customer. additionally your parcel is not forwarded from the port of entry until the charge is paid.

i imagine this will work in reverse in the case of USA new tariffs on imported goods.
the shipping companies will be ready to do this. i suspect the US govt. has not yet set up the agency these tariffs once collected are sent to. additionally i would imagine a similar system might operate where a buyer in the USA is informed of the tex and it must be paid once it arrives at the port of entry.

its complex to begin with. goods have to be sold without local taxes and only the USA tariff applied. but i guess all govts all over the world are going for the revenue. and lets face it - they probably all need to. just about every western government has a problem with budget deficits.

and its just another thing shipping companies have to take on to do business.

in the case of australian sourced goods the imposition of a 10% tariff is no surprise to me.
there has been a bit of hoo hah about it down here but i can't see justification for being upset. its simply a symmetrical move by the USA to balance the costs imposed by australia on USA made goods. completely fair. i don't think it will take long for this to settle down. after all its a revenue stream the US govt. will be eager to activate.

the one difficulty that could arise in this is that china is being dealt with firmly by the USA govt. and a lot of things are theoretically made here or at least their final assembly.
but components are manufactured in china. that bit could get complicated and delay a lot of goods being classified or assigned an appropriate tariff. time will tell.
