Is it common for a 914 to roll when turned off , parked on a very shallow slope when in gear without parking brake on? Cllutch seems ok in basic driving . Is it the oft hypothesized low compression? Car starts and runs great so there should be reasonable compression.,when very hot the engine does smoke some so maybe it needs rings or more . Anyhow , Trying to estimate if the rolling car is a worn clutch or low compression. Guess I should see if engine is turning when it rolls . Any info on the topic appreciated !

Obviously, no. On a gentle incline having the car in gear should keep it from rolling. If the clutch was that worn, you would know it.

handbrake only - oh yes.
particularly if the brakes are nicely hot when you park.
give it 5 minutes and it will be off and making its silent escape to seek a shopping cart to run into.

in gear - def not.
i always park in gear and with hand brake on. see point 1 above. never had it roll in that state. usually park it either in first or second gear.

something is wrong if she is rolling in gear.

It will roll nice and easy in fifth. First second or reverse, not so much.

Is the motor a little tired
High miles and a little smoke at start up?

Probably should run a compression check

Sure sounds like low compression. Wheel chocks would be easier than a rebuild

Sounds like you have a few things to check. The parking break should hold it no matter what if your breaks are good and the cable is adjusted correctly.
As others have said, low compression, faulty clutch (or misadjustment) or parking in 5th could allow it to roll.

If it rolls easy in 5th, do you see the engine rotating when it does? That could help rule out the clutch and so forth.
