I watched a replay of today’s action on the 917. A lot of great cars today. This one was the McQueen of the ball.

I’m not sure if it ever sold.

Went back and reread some of the history of this car and time. Amazing time for race car development. The risks that drivers and manufacturers took… nearly bankrupting their businesses. And how the heck do you cool the inner cylinders on a flat 12. I guess when you hit 240mph on the straights you get enough air flow.

Can you imagine being passed in a 914 by this beast?

It was exciting to watch - the crowd was really hoping for a sale and booed when it didn’t hammer sold. I agree that it will sell, possible this weekend.

It was cool to see Brian Redmond and Steve’s grandson Chase side by side chatting as the bidding climbed quickly.

Can you imagine being passed in a 914 by this beast?

I experienced that exact situation. It was at the NNJR 48 Hours at The Glen in 1975 or 1976 or maybe 1977. I was in my stock 1973 2 liter, beyond half way down the long back straight going as fast as the car would go. Maybe a little over 100 mph (if I recall, a lot of that long back straight is an uphill grade). This was prior to the install of the bus stop chicane. I checked my mirrors and there wasn’t a car in sight. I relaxed a bit, flexed my hands and fingers and checked the gauges. All of a sudden out of nowhere Chuck Stoddard in his white 917 flew by me just a couple of feet away from the passenger side going in the neighborhood of 200 mph. It was a complete surprise that scared the shit out of me. There was no need for me to wear earplugs in my stock street car but when that 917 passed me at full song just feet from my ears, it was an experience I will never forget. Not to mention that it almost blew my car off the track.

Will never get tired of looking at the Stance of (any) 917, the amount of tire on the road surface JUST amazing.
Front and rear magnesium wheels from one of (late) Vasek Polak's 917 spares at a friend's shop >> pick it up with ease !

This is as close as I can get to affording a 917K. Think I'll install it on my '71 914-6...

Otis Chandler would bring it out to RIR, along with his #6 Sunoco 917/30, 935, and blast them around on POC race weekends. His driving skills were 100%. Team known as 'Vintage Racing, good old days>> before he sold everything off

my Sources tell me that Mecom had bought the 917 and used it to over promote the Auction. They never intended to sell it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

I think that would be fraud. I doubt Mecum would take that kind of risk with a bidder with deep enough pockets to bid on a 25M car.

When Otis C./ 'Vintage Racing owned it, he ran the #1 on the car for his POC exhibit laps.John Thomas (of Bozzani P+A) was his co-driver. On the L/hand plexiglass window there are 2 stickers: one is POC and the other is (Dan McLoughlin's) A-I-R custom fiberglass body panels >> mostly Porsche/ IMSA specific racecars.
Otis had an extreme collection: 917 Gulf, 917-30 Sunoco (Talledega rekord car), 935, 934, 930*, 916.
*I built a set of SS race headers for his street turbo>> installed in Hollwood at Bob Smith P+A (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Had to laugh......

The auction house listed in the specs a V-12. Maybe that's why it didn't sell?

It had a Reserve, so it wouldn't matter who owned it.
