Hi. Is it possible to determin Engine type/size based on vin number on a 1974 914?

A '73 left the factory with either a 1.7 or a 2.0. They were all "type IV" motors 
And yes, the VIN does not confirm. You would need original paperwork, COA or the new COA replacement thingy to document the correct engine.
