Hello all,
I just relocated from the bay area to the central coast California. Can anybody recommend a 914 savvy mechanic in the San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara area?

Thanks!

I do all my own work on my cars, including my 914 so I haven't personally had much experience with mechanics in the area.

That said, one of the mechanics that I've had suggested to me by various sources is Rick's German Performance in Atascadero.

Welcome to the Central Coast by the way, enjoy the SLO life. Where did you end up settling in?

If in Santa Barbara, I would check out Schneider Autohaus:

Welcome to the area.

German Auto in San Luis Obispo is probably the best all around German independent shop in the area (IMHO). SGK in SLO is also good for later model Porsches. Nobody around here really specializes in 914's that I know of, though.

Schneider’s on De La Vina in Santa Barbara is hands down the Porsche shop in the area. Joe Schneider is retired now and doesn’t wrench anymore. He’s an ex NASA engineer and the shop reflects that capability.
I take my 914-6 there and have for over 25 years. The SB Porsche dealer will not touch older Porsches and have no one knowledgeable about the older air cooled models.

Jason is the proprietor. He built the car pictured in my handle for the PO.

Gonna second that, and you might seek out Chris A. when you're there.

Best,

I was thinking of Schneider when I read the post! Wasn't even sure if he was still around.

I was born and raised in SM and Nipomo... about 20 years worth. I should drive Dad's car back through the old roads just for fun.... idea.gif

The old roads are full of cars and bike riders now. I remember driving Highway 150 from SB to Ojai years ago and being able to wind out and have the road to myself. Now it’s a traffic jam.

We are in Arroyo Grande but my work office is in Santa Barbara. Looking forward to seeing some fellow 914 drivers in the central coast.

Nice, my wife has family in Santa Maria.

What does your car look like? Some previously unseen cars have popped up recently. I drive a viper green with tan interior '71 and I am located in Santa Barbara.

Werner Schott in Buellton (805 705-7661) built the motor for me. He used to race 911s in Germany in the day.

Nice, another green 914! I have a '73 Zambezi Green 2.0 rebuilt to 2056.

I wish I could find a job in the central coast and get out of the bay area. Nice work.

What line of work are you in?
alex914
Just wanted to follow up that I have now had great experiences at German Auto in SLO. The 914 has had a couple of services there and they helped sort my engine out, too.

I recently bought a 993 and took that car to Schneider's in SB. Super happy with what they did there. It was a low mile (12k) car that had never had any brake work done. Chris at Schneider's sorted that out and the car is fully sorted.

Thanks for these great pointers folks.

Cool post. Didn’t know at the time I’d move to SLO and here I am. Too funny!

Congrats on your move to SLO Town
I lived there in the mid 80s. Wish I had bought several houses back then.
